Animal Life

Only some insects and other small animals spend their entire life on Antarctica’s main land. Antarctica’s largest land animal is the wingless midge, which is a kind of fly, which is no bigger than 12mm in length. The rest of the land animals live nearer to the edges of Antarctica.

Plant Life

Only a small number of plants grow in Antarctica because of the ice-covered land. Mosses are the most commonly found plants in Antarctica. Only two flowering plants grow in Antarctica. One is a kind of grass that forms thick mats on the sunny slopes. The other, which is a herb, grows in a cushion like fashion

King Penguins

A population of around two-million King penguin’s live on Crozet, Macquarie and Marion Islands. The King penguins are like the Emperor penguins. They are way too big to do their breeding in cycle in one brief summer. In three years king penguins raise two chicks.

   

Smaller Penguins

The king penguins share the beaches with several smaller penguins. Macaronis, one of the penguins with a crest breed in their millions. The smallest penguins called the rockhoppers are sometimes found with Macaronis. Geloos are the fastest swimmers of all normally breed on South Georgia.  

Introduced Animals

Animals like cats, rats, mice, and rabbits are competing with the native wild life. Settlers bought in these animals. Heard Island is the only place with out intruders.

 

 

Huskies

Sledge dogs that are called huskies come in four different breeds. They are: the Labrador, Greenland, Alaska, and Siberia. They are good at pulling sledge’s through the windy and freezing area’s. They keep warm during blizzards by curling up from nose to tail and their backs to the wind. They also make sure that they have a breathing hole and it also keeps them warm.
