Houses

In the 1960s most of the houses in Orford were made of weatherboards. The principal building material used in shacks was vertical board with sheet roofing.  This material was oily and did not require paint.  Asbestos was the next most popular material for shacks.  Nearly all shacks and houses in Orford were single storey.

The following information about the population of Orford was provided by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Most houses in Orford had sewerage in the 1960s and there was a storm drain in Charles St. Smaller streets had open drains which led to the Prosser River.  The sewer was emptied at three points into the Prosser River as well as in to the sea at Front Beach (now known as Millington’s) and at Raspins Beach.
