Orford,
Tasmania

| Attractions
Orford is an attractive
holiday area and offers excellent fishing, and beautiful beaches. There
are many excellent walks along the coast and into bushland. There
are great views over the Tasman Sea from the Thumbs Lookout. |

|
A ferry from the Triabunna
jetty goes daily to Maria
Island, a very special place that has historic ruins, sweeping bays,
rugged cliffs and mountains and a remarkably tame wildlife. Maria
Island is a National Park. |
| The
Wielangta State Forest is not far from Orford. There is a 29km
gravel logging road through the forest, linking the East Coast with the
Tasman Peninsula. |

People
The town tends to almost
treble in population during the summer months and is very quiet in
winter. Many of the houses in Orford are holiday houses or
weekenders. |
| A large
percentage of the locals are retirees and people involved in the tourist
industry. Quite a few are involved in various fishing industries or work
at the local woodchip mill in the next town. |
| Services
Orford Tasmania has one
supermarket, a post office, a petrol
station and a number of take-away and dine-in food places. |

|
| There is a
hotel, quite a few holiday units, holiday houses available for
rent, a
convention centre, a small Anglican church and a police station.
There is a golf course, a lawn bowls club, a cricket club, a small hall
and a community netball court that is part of the school. |

|
Orford has only
one school, which is ours. There is a high school ten kilometres
away in Triabunna. We have 90 students who appreciate the lovely
grounds and spacious classrooms. We would very much like to make
contact with other people from towns called Orford around the
world. We know there are quite a few! |
