CLEAN SCHOOLS CHALLENGE

Interim Report May 2003

Things are underway here at Orford Primary.  We have received our funding and are now happily making use of it.  A detailed record of money in and money out is being kept.

Beanbag Project

We have already purchased some beanbag covers and footstool covers to try our idea for stuffing them with paper instead of beans.  The beanbags didn’t work that well as the paper made them too heavy.  However, the footstools seem to be a great success and we have four ready for sale. Luckily this seems to be using up lots of shredded paper!

Monthly Craft Day

Our first day is now planned and has a date on the calendar.  Some of the necessary materials have been ordered.  Suggestions are still being considered but hopefully we will use up lots of packaging cardboard!

Booklet Production

We have not yet begun to put together our booklet of tips for reusing common products.  However a start is planned in the next couple of weeks.

Interim Report July 2003

Beanbag Project

This has now become a major production.  We have quite a decent stack of beanbags and footstools that have been stuffed with shredded paper and flattened down by co-operative students who like to do something productive without expending any energy while they listen to their daily chapter of Harry Potter”.  A lot of interest has been expressed by wandering parents and visitors to the school, so we’re expecting that we will be able to ask quite a decent price for them at our sale.  We have also done a few “charity” top-ups of old beanbags and footstools for class family members.  It’s hard to believe, but we have actually run out of shredded paper scraps temporarily!

Craft Days

Our Craft Days have been an excellent success and have sort of spilled over into normal classroom activities.  Whenever class members have spare moments they go and make a note cube or stuff a firelighter.  Collaged toy boxes are the thing of the moment and this is helping to use up some of that endless packaging that schools have to deal with.  Our paper making was a big success.

Booklet Production

We still have not yet begun to put together our booklet of tips for reusing common products.  This is something that we had better attend to urgently!

Recycling Sale

The local hall has been booked and the date set for August 8th.  We are intending to sell our footstools, craft products and old school library books to the general public and students.  The World Vision Committee will hold a sweet stall and that should help to bring the crowds along.  We are in the process of publicising this now.
