The Past

Before 2002 our school did not  have a Waste Management Policy or any plans at all.
Rubbish from our school was just collected, unsorted, from each classroom and taken to the local tip where it was buried in its garbage bags.  Recycling was far from our minds and from the minds of most people in our community.

Some class rooms in our school re-used paper and cardboard scraps a little bit but only two classrooms collected cardboard boxes and plastic containers to be used for art projects. Lots of paper was thrown out every day, with only a small amount of it used up.
The one thing we did do well before 2002 was collect our food scraps and garden waste. We are happy to say that a bin has always been provided in our playground for food scraps, which go into our school compost bin. Our Groundsperson has been using home-made compost for years.  That's about the only thing we were doing right!

Luckily, the Grade 5/6 class of 2002 became inspired to do something about this situation.  Follow the links on our main menu and join us in our journey.  We have certainly learned lots along the way!
