Our Goals

We decided that we needed to lift our game. After doing some research we decided we would aim at achieving the following objectives as soon as possible.

Objectives

  • To cut down on the amount of paper currently wasted in our school.
  • To reduce the amount of rubbish we send to the tip by at least 50%.
  • To divert recyclables from the school trash.
  • To educate students into a “reduce, reuse, recycle” mentality.
  • To find a way to transport our recyclables to the nearest depot.
  • To allow the children’s enthusiasm to filter into the general community so that our local council would feel obliged to establish some good recycling practices.

Strategies

The following strategies were suggested as ways of achieving our objectives.

  • Place labelled containers in each classroom so that all age groups can sort their rubbish.

  • Provide a suitable outdoor area for storing recyclables.

  • Obtain some large bins for transporting recyclables to nearest depot.

  • Offer incentives or have inter-class competitions for reducing waste.

  • Hold a poster competition for students.

  • Provide some handy hints for classroom teachers and families at home.

  • Inform the local council and community members about what we are trying to do and ask for their support.

  • Encourage classes to become more involved in maintaining our school compost bin and growing things.
