The Future

Now we're on the right track at Orford Primary School.  We are happy with the changes that we have made this year and reducing, re-using, recycling has become a habit with everyone at our school.  We are reasonably confident that even when our staff changes and the Grade 5/6 class of 2002 are long gone, Orford Primary School will continue to be an excellent example to other schools around the world in the area of waste management..
One of the things our Grade 5/6 class did was to make some suggestions for improvements to our local tip site.  We drew our plans and then wrote an explanation about them. We sent some of our suggestions to the General Manager of the Glamorgan Spring Bay Council in the hope that they would be considered.  We also published some of our suggestions in our school newsletter.

Here is a proposal from two of our students.

Our Proposal for a New Southern Glamorgan /Spring Bay Waste Disposal Site

Green Waste : At the Southern Glamorgan /Spring Bay Waste Disposal Site we would like green waste to be put through a chipper or a mulcher.  Some of our suggestions for disposing of the woodchips or mulch are to sell it for a small price per trailer load, donate it to nursing homes etc. or just give it away for free.  We personally think that the best idea would be to sell it for a few dollars per trailer load so that the Southern Glamorgan /Spring Bay Waste Disposal Site can save up more money.

Recycling: Our plan for recycling is that the Council needs to start a recycling program with recycling crates for people to put their recycling out at least once a fortnight.  The Council can come and collect it along with the all the garbage.  The sort of things that we think that should be recycled are HDPE plastic, PET plastic, aluminum, cardboard and of course, paper.

An idea to recycle stuff is for us to shred all the paper and cardboard and put it into bales, crush all the separate plastics and aluminum into bales then transport them to Collex in Hobart.  If this is too expensive, another idea is to send all the recyclables directly to Hobart in a truck once every one or two weeks for them to process it.

People need to know that the things they are leaving in good trust to be recycled are really being recycled and not just buried.

Waste Disposal: One of the big problems with the Orford Tip we have is that it smells too much at the moment.  We have a suggestion for the smell.  The first one is give out biodegradable garbage bags each week and tell people to put all smelly waste in them.  When the Council comes round and gets the garbage on Monday mornings they could put a trailer on the garbage truck and put all the smelly waste in.  When the Council takes the recycling to the new Southern Glamorgan /Spring Bay Waste Disposal Site, the friendly tip staff could put in a much smaller tip face and fill it in every week.

Tip Shop: The tip face should be kept tidy so that the friendly and approachable tip staff can access it to take stuff off it for a tip shop, if it is possible that we could have a tip shop.  It would be good if people could deliver stuff to the site that they don’t want anymore and that they don’t want to throw out either, so that other people could use these things. The friendly staff could come and pick it up for the tip shop every night.  People would pay a small amount of money and get some really good bargains.

Broken Cars: At the tip at the moment we have noticed there are always broken cars lying round.  We think that people should be able to come and take pieces off the cars because its not like anyone is going to drive the cars again if they are at the tip.  Another idea is, you could employ Andrew and I to strip cars and put the car parts in the tip shop.
